Vision for the project

to evaluate the use of low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for use in monitoring bushfire fuel moisture content (FMC).

Research

Funded by the NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) and partnering with NSW Forestry Corporation, Indicium Dynamics and ACT Parks and Conservation, this research deploys low-cost IoT sensors in bushland to monitor FMC in real time with temporal resolution. The results are compared with existing lower spatio-temporal resolution, landscape scale FMC monitoring products. Results will be analysed to determine the efficacy of using IoT sensors by fire managers for planning and implementing hazard reduction burns, replacing or in concert with existing technologies.
